Delhi: Following successful trials of CCTV cameras in passenger coaches, Indian Railways has decided to install CCTV cameras across all coaches to enhance passenger safety. Miscreants and organised gangs often target unsuspecting passengers — the presence of cameras is expected to deter such activities significantly. To maintain passenger privacy, cameras will be installed only in common movement areas near the doors.

Union Railway Minister Shri Ashwini Vaishnaw and Minister of State Shri Ravneet Singh Bittu reviewed the progress of CCTV installations in locomotives and coaches during a meeting with senior Railway Board officials on 12th July 2025.
Railways to install CCTV Cameras in All 74,000 Coaches and 15,000 Locos for Enhanced Safety

Trials in Northern Railway’s coaches and locomotives have been successful. Approvals have been given to equip all 74,000 coaches and 15,000 locomotives. Each coach will have four dome cameras — two at each entrance — while each locomotive will have six cameras: one at the front, rear, and on both sides, plus a dome camera and desk-mounted microphones in each cab.
Modern Technology for Better Security
Officials confirmed that the cameras will meet the latest STQC standards. The Railway Minister stressed that high-quality footage must be ensured even for trains running at over 100 kmph and in low light conditions. He also encouraged exploring AI-based analysis of CCTV data in partnership with the IndiaAI mission.

Cameras in common areas will help identify offenders while respecting passenger privacy. This initiative highlights Indian Railways’ commitment to safe, secure, and passenger-friendly travel.
