Cabinet Clears ₹3,626 Crore Pune Metro Phase-2 Expansion, Targets East–West Link Across Key Suburbs

The Union Cabinet on Tuesday approved Phase-2 of the Pune Metro Rail Project, paving the way for two elevated corridors—Vanaz to Chandani Chowk and Ramwadi to Wagholi/Vitthalwadi—as extensions of the existing Vanaz–Ramwadi line. Together, the two corridors will stretch 12.75 km and add 13 stations, boosting connectivity across fast-growing pockets such as Kothrud, Bavdhan, Kharadi, and Wagholi.

The project will be executed over four years at an estimated cost of ₹3,626.24 crore, with funding shared equally by the central government, the Maharashtra government, and external bilateral or multilateral agencies. The extensions are part of Pune’s Comprehensive Mobility Plan, envisioned to create a seamless metro link from Chandani Chowk to Wagholi along the East–West spine.

Officials said the new routes are designed to serve IT hubs, educational institutions, and commercial centers while easing traffic on arterial roads like Paud Road and Nagar Road. The upgraded network will allow multimodal integration at the District Court Interchange with Line-1 (Nigdi–Katraj) and Line-3 (Hinjewadi–District Court).

Under long-term plans, intercity bus terminals from Mumbai and Bengaluru will link to the metro at Chandani Chowk, while services from Ahilya Nagar and Chhatrapati Sambhaji Nagar will be integrated at Wagholi. Pre-construction work—including topographical surveys and design planning—is already underway.

Maha-Metro will carry out all civil, electromechanical, and systems work. Daily ridership for Line-2 is projected to grow from 96,000 passengers in 2027 to 3.49 lakh by 2057, with authorities pitching the project as a transformative push for greener, safer, and more inclusive urban mobility.
