Errol Musk, father of Tesla and SpaceX CEO Elon Musk, expressed confidence that Tesla will establish a manufacturing plant in India, stating that Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his son will negotiate an arrangement beneficial to both. Speaking in New Delhi, Errol Musk emphasized that Modi must consider India’s interests while Elon prioritizes Tesla’s business strategy, but he believes an agreement is inevitable.
Calling India “one of the most important places in the world,” Errol Musk said Tesla’s presence in the country is a necessity rather than a possibility. His visit, in his capacity as Global Advisor to Servotech Renewable Power System Ltd, highlights increasing international interest in India’s rapid push toward green technology and electric mobility.
India has set aggressive EV adoption goals, aiming for 30 percent penetration in passenger vehicles, 80 percent in two-wheelers and three-wheelers, and 70 percent in commercial vehicles by 2030. Earlier this year, Modi and Elon Musk discussed opportunities for collaboration in technology and innovation, with Musk confirming plans to visit India later in the year. Modi stressed that India remains committed to strengthening global partnerships in emerging industries, reinforcing its role in advanced manufacturing.
However, Union Heavy Industries Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy stated Monday that Tesla is not expected to begin manufacturing in India soon, saying the company is currently focused on opening showrooms rather than production facilities. Meanwhile, automakers such as Mercedes-Benz, Skoda-Volkswagen, Hyundai, and Kia have shown strong interest in building EVs in India. Despite this, Errol Musk remains optimistic that Tesla will eventually invest in Indian manufacturing, insisting that a factory in the country is inevitable.
