0

India’s Index of Industrial Production (IIP) reported a year-on-year growth of 2.7% in April 2025, reflecting resilience in the country’s industrial sector despite global economic fluctuations. The latest Quick Estimates, released by the Ministry of Statistics & Programme Implementation, highlight strong momentum in manufacturing, which recorded a robust expansion of 3.4%, offsetting declines in mining activity.

The IIP for April 2025 stands at 152.0, rising from 148.0 in April 2024. Among the three main sectors, mining witnessed a marginal contraction of 0.2%, while manufacturing grew by 3.4%, and electricity output increased by 1.1%. The manufacturing sector’s gains were fueled by growth in 16 out of 23 industry groups. Leading contributors included basic metals, motor vehicles, and machinery and equipment, with key items such as steel pipes, auto components, and machine tools showing significant output increases.

Capital goods emerged as the strongest-performing category, registering an impressive 20.3% growth, driven by higher investments in machinery and equipment. Consumer durables posted a solid expansion of 6.4%, indicating robust demand, while intermediate goods recorded a 4.1% increase. Infrastructure and construction-related goods also saw a rise of 4.0%, underscoring continued spending in development projects. However, primary goods and consumer non-durables experienced slight contractions of 0.4% and 1.7%, respectively.

Revisions to March 2025 data revealed an improvement in indices following a higher weighted response rate, rising from 88% to 93%, demonstrating strengthened data accuracy. The April 2025 Quick Estimate was compiled with a weighted response rate of 88%.

The industrial growth trajectory is expected to maintain its upward momentum, supported by continued investment in manufacturing and infrastructure. The next release, covering IIP data for May 2025, is scheduled for June 30, 2025.
