India has officially overtaken Japan to become the world’s fourth-largest economy, marking a historic moment in its economic ascent. The announcement was made by NITI Aayog CEO B.V.R. Subrahmanyam, who cited IMF data confirming that India’s nominal GDP now stands at $4.187 trillion, surpassing Japan’s $4.186 trillion.

Government leaders hailed the achievement as a testament to India’s sustained economic growth and Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision for national development. Union Minister for Women and Child Development Annapurna Devi emphasized that India’s rise from eleventh place during the UPA era to fourth place today reflects a decade of consistent economic progress.

Minister of State for Defence Sanjay Seth described the milestone as a moment of national pride, highlighting Modi’s unwavering commitment to economic expansion. BJP MLA Harish Khurana echoed similar sentiments, calling India’s progress over the past 11 years remarkable, while Navin Jaiswal credited Modi’s leadership for India’s rapid ascent in global rankings.

Subrahmanyam projected that if India maintains its current trajectory, it could overtake Germany within the next 2.5 to 3 years, securing its position as the third-largest economy. The geopolitical and economic environment remains favorable for India’s continued growth, with strong private consumption and industrial expansion driving momentum.

India’s economic rise underscores its strategic positioning in global trade, reinforcing its ambition to become a leading force in international markets.
