The Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs (CBIC), in collaboration with the FIT INDIA Movement, organized a nationwide cyclothon titled “Sundays on Cycle” in the lead-up to the completion of eight years of the Goods and Services Tax (GST). The flagship event took place early in the morning at Major Dhyan Chand National Stadium in New Delhi, with participation from more than 100 CGST commissionerates across the country.
Shashank Priya, Member (GST), CBIC, flagged off the event in Delhi and highlighted the transformative impact of GST on India’s taxation system. He emphasized how GST unified nearly 30 different indirect taxes into a single, transparent tax structure, simplifying tax administration and compliance for businesses and citizens.
The Mumbai and Pune Zones of CGST added glamour to the event by involving Bollywood celebrities such as Sunil Shetty, Milind Soman, and John Abraham. Across the country, more than 50,000 cyclists, including senior CBIC officers and representatives from various ministries, actively participated in the initiative.
To engage the public, CBIC set up a “Know About GST” help desk at the venue, addressing queries and distributing informational brochures on key GST topics. Digital kiosks with QR codes allowed participants to scan and download GST resource materials directly to their mobile devices. The event was further amplified with vibrant hoardings and banners highlighting GST reforms, taxpayer-centric initiatives, and benefits for MSMEs.
The cyclothon blended public health advocacy with taxpayer engagement, exemplifying CBIC’s commitment to bringing GST closer to people through inclusive outreach programs. This initiative not only celebrated national health goals but also reinforced the ongoing journey of GST reform, as India completes eight years under this landmark tax regime.
