In a moment of immense achievement for India’s National Cadet Corps, an expedition team successfully reached the summit of Mount Everest (8,848 meters) on May 18, 2025. The team, consisting of ten cadets—five boys and five girls—along with four Officers, two Junior Commissioned Officers, one Girl Cadet Instructor, and ten Non-Commissioned Officers, showcased extraordinary resilience, discipline, and determination in their pursuit of this historic ascent.
The selected cadets were chosen through an intensive nationwide selection process and underwent rigorous training to prepare for the expedition. Their journey began with a pre-Everest training climb at Mount Abi Gamin, followed by advanced technical and winter survival training at the Army Mountaineering Institute in Siachen Base Camp. After several months of preparation, a final team of ten cadets was identified for the Everest mission.
The young climbers, averaging just 19 years in age, became the focal point of admiration during their acclimatization phases on Everest. The Sherpas of Nepal, seasoned guides and mountaineers, praised the NCC team for their exceptional physical endurance, morale, and discipline. As they navigated harsh conditions, treacherous ice formations, and unpredictable weather patterns, the cadets demonstrated unwavering perseverance, underscoring the spirit of Indian youth.
Upon reaching the summit, the team proudly unfurled the Tricolour and the NCC Flag atop the world’s highest peak, symbolizing India’s national pride and the aspirations of its youth. The achievement reflects years of dedication by the NCC in nurturing adventure sports, resilience, and leadership qualities among its cadets.
This expedition marks the third successful Everest ascent by the NCC, with previous summits achieved in 2013 and 2016. The team embarked on their journey under the patronage of the Ministry of Defence, and the mission was flagged off from New Delhi by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh on April 3, 2025.
The feat underscores India’s growing presence in global mountaineering challenges while highlighting the effectiveness of structured training programs in preparing young individuals for extreme conditions. The NCC continues to instill discipline, courage, and patriotism among its members, paving the way for future achievements in adventure and leadership.
This historic climb stands as an inspiration to aspiring mountaineers and young Indians, reaffirming the nation’s commitment to fostering excellence, determination, and national pride.
