The Department of Fisheries is set to host the Coastal States Meet 2025 on April 28 in Mumbai, bringing together key stakeholders to strengthen marine fisheries governance, promote sustainability, and unveil critical projects. The event, chaired by Union Minister Rajiv Ranjan Singh, will feature the launch of significant initiatives, including the Marine Fisheries Census Operations and Aqua Insurance, marking a major push in the sector.

Projects worth US Rs. 255.30 million under the Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana will be inaugurated, benefiting seven coastal states and Union Territories. The event will also introduce measures such as the Turtle Excluder Device project and the Standard Operating Procedure for the Vessel Communication and Support System to ensure responsible fishing practices and enhance maritime safety.

Outstanding fisheries cooperatives, start-ups, and climate-resilient coastal villages will be recognized, with beneficiaries receiving Aqua Insurance certificates and Kisan Credit Cards under the Pradhan Mantri Matsya Kisan Samridhi Sah-Yojana. The introduction of Aqua Insurance provides targeted financial protection for aquafarmers, ensuring secure investments and broad accessibility.

The meet will welcome dignitaries from Maharashtra, Gujarat, Goa, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Odisha, and Puducherry, alongside representatives from state fisheries departments, ICAR institutes, and the Bay of Bengal Programme. Technical discussions will cover marine fisheries regulation, sea safety, mariculture standards, export promotion, and certification for marine capture fisheries. The event will also host an exhibition showcasing advanced technologies and innovative practices in fisheries and aquaculture.

India’s fisheries sector plays a vital role in the economy, with marine resources yielding an estimated 5.31 million tonnes annually. Coastal states and Union Territories contribute 72% of the nation’s total fish production and account for 76% of seafood exports. With over 3,477 coastal fishing villages, the sector remains a cornerstone of rural livelihoods. The Coastal States Meet 2025 aims to drive modern, eco-friendly initiatives, strengthen regulatory frameworks, and enhance long-term sustainability, reinforcing India’s position in global fisheries development.
