India Advances Global Quantum Leadership with New Standards and Strategic Initiatives

The Third International Quantum Communication Conclave convened in New Delhi today, bringing together experts, researchers, and policymakers to discuss quantum communication, cryptography, and the future of secure digital transformation. Hosted by the Telecommunication Engineering Centre in collaboration with the Centre for Development of Telematics, the event marked a pivotal step in India’s quantum technology evolution, reinforcing its commitment to innovation and global leadership in secure communications.

Leading the discussions, the Minister of Communications emphasized that quantum computing represents a monumental leap forward, with the potential to redefine innovation, accelerate scientific discovery, and unlock solutions to challenges once thought insurmountable. The future, he asserted, is no longer just digital—it is quantum.

India’s National Quantum Mission, launched in 2023 with an outlay of **US Rs. 723.79 million**, has positioned the country as a front-runner in quantum research and development. Three key documents were unveiled to support quantum-secure technologies: the Standard on Generic Requirements for Quantum Random Number Generators, a Technical Report on Migration to Post-Quantum Cryptography, and a Technical Report on Quantum Secure 5G and Beyond 5G Core using PQC. These initiatives provide a framework for organizations to evaluate quantum security solutions and ensure preparedness for quantum-safe cryptographic transitions.

The Principal Scientific Adviser highlighted the significance of the conclave in the context of the United Nations declaring 2025 as the Year of Quantum. He underscored the evolution of quantum technologies, stating that the global landscape is entering the second revolution of quantum mechanics, where controlling quantum systems is now within reach.

Technical sessions featured prominent experts from India and abroad, discussing advancements in quantum key distribution, post-quantum cryptography, and applications of quantum-safe technologies. Exhibitions by leading R&D institutions, startups, and industries showcased India’s rapidly growing quantum ecosystem, with solutions ready for deployment across various sectors.

The conclave reaffirmed India’s dedication to quantum technology research, international collaboration, and standardization efforts. By addressing existing standardization gaps and fostering contributions to intellectual property creation, India is poised to shape the future of secure communications in the quantum age.
