Mumbai: More than 6500 people are fined for not wearing helmets across Mumbai. The Mumbai traffic police has just started penalties against the biker and pillion riders for not wearing helmets from this Thursday and uptil now at least 6500 people are fined for not wearing helmets.

The police on Thursday started penalizing those riding pillion on two-wheelers without helmets, charging them with a fine of Rs 500 each and also facing the risk of temporary suspension of their driving license. The announcement was first made on May 25, and Mumbaikars were granted a time of 15 days to buy helmets, after which the police began taking action on Thursday

All the 3k and above pillion riders penalized were mainly found in Colaba, Marine Drive, Azad Maidan, Kalbadevi, Dongri, Tardeo, and sanpada, And many were caught from the western suburbs, especially in Santacruz, Dahisar, and Goregaon belt area.

Under sections 129 (which mandates the wearing of protective headgear) and 194 D (punishment for contravening section 129) of the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988, the traffic police shall impose a fine on bikers riding without helmets. Last year the traffic police had even launched a crackdown on many bikers who were without their helmets and gave them warnings and even counseled them to make them aware of the dangers of riding a bike without helmets.

Out of all deaths caused by road accidents, 80% of them were because of motorcyclist not wearing helmets, according to the report released by ministry of road transport and highways, that over 40000 thousand deaths occured across India in year 2020 were caused to non-helmet usage. 70% were riders and 35% were pillions.
