Railways Rationalises Basic Passenger Train Fares from 1 July 2025, Moderate Increases Based on Distance and Class

0

The Ministry of Railways has announced a rationalisation of basic fares for passenger train services, effective from 1 July 2025, aimed at streamlining fare structures and enhancing financial sustainability. The updated fares are based on the latest Passenger Fare Table issued by the Indian Railway Conference Association and apply across ordinary, mail/express, and AC classes, including premier and special trains.

There will be no change in suburban single journey fares or season tickets for both suburban and non-suburban routes. For ordinary non-AC classes on non-suburban trains, there is no increase in second-class fares for distances up to 500 km. Beyond that, the fare increase is tiered: ₹5 for 501–1500 km, ₹10 for 1501–2500 km, and ₹15 for 2501–3000 km. Sleeper and first-class fares in this category will rise by 0.5 paisa per kilometre.

In the mail/express category for non-AC classes, second-class, sleeper, and first-class fares will each increase by 1 paisa per kilometre. For AC classes—spanning AC Chair Car, AC 3-Tier/3-Economy, AC 2-Tier, AC First, Executive Class, and Executive Anubhuti—the hike is 2 paisa per kilometre.

This revision also affects premium and special trains such as Rajdhani, Shatabdi, Duronto, Vande Bharat, Tejas, Humsafar, Amrit Bharat, Mahamana, Gatimaan, Antyodaya, Jan Shatabdi, Yuva Express, and services with AC Vistadome and Anubhuti coaches, in line with the class-wise fare adjustments.

Ancillary charges including reservation fees, superfast surcharges, and GST will remain unchanged. Fare rounding protocols also continue under current norms. The revised fares apply only to tickets booked on or after 1 July 2025; tickets issued earlier remain valid at existing rates with no refund or adjustment.

All Zonal Railways have been instructed to update fare displays at stations and ensure seamless implementation across the Passenger Reservation System (PRS), Unreserved Ticketing System (UTS), and manual ticketing processes.
