India Extends Income Tax Return Deadline to September 15 for AY 2025-26 Amid Major Compliance Revisions

0

The Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) has extended the due date for filing Income Tax Returns (ITRs) for the Assessment Year 2025-26 from July 31, 2025, to September 15, 2025. The decision aims to accommodate the extensive revisions introduced in the notified ITRs, ensuring system readiness and seamless utility rollout for taxpayers.

The ITRs for AY 2025-26 have undergone structural and content modifications to simplify compliance, improve transparency, and enhance reporting accuracy. This extension will allow adequate time for integration and testing of new filing utilities, ensuring a smooth taxpayer experience.

Additionally, credits arising from TDS statements, due for filing by May 31, 2025, will begin reflecting from early June, limiting the filing window. The extension addresses concerns raised by stakeholders, ensuring compliance integrity and accuracy while providing taxpayers with sufficient time for submission.

A formal notification regarding the extension will be issued separately. The move is expected to mitigate procedural delays and streamline the filing process under the revised framework.
