0

The Bureau of Indian Standards, the National Standards Body under the Government of India, has launched an internship program for 500 students from its MoU partner institutions. The announcement was made at the Annual Convention of BIS Standardisation Chairs and Nodal Faculty of MoU Partner Institutions, reaffirming the government’s commitment to embedding a culture of quality and standardisation in academia.

The internships will be available to students enrolled in four-year degree courses, five-year integrated programs, postgraduate degrees, and diploma courses. The eight-week program will focus on pre-standardisation work in two key industries, surveys on Quality Control Order compliance in collaboration with BIS offices, and site visits to large-scale industries, MSMEs, and laboratories. Interns will undertake comprehensive studies on manufacturing processes, testing protocols, raw materials, in-process controls, and overall product quality assessments.

BIS has made significant strides in fostering academic collaboration, incorporating standardisation modules into curricula across 15 institutions, commissioning more than 130 research and development projects, and establishing BIS Corners and Academic Dashboards in over 50 institutions. A total of 198 Standards Clubs have been set up across 52 institutes, with more than 3,400 students participating in national quizzes. For the 2025-26 academic year, 500 student internships have been planned.

Director General of BIS, Pramod Kumar Tiwari, in his inaugural address, stated that the initiative is a national mission to cultivate an enduring culture of quality and standardisation in academia. Deputy Director General of Standardisation, Rajeev Sharma, encouraged institutions to adopt action-oriented collaborations, emphasizing their role in strengthening India’s quality ecosystem.

The convention featured technical sessions on curriculum integration, standards formulation, student engagement through Standards Clubs, and other promotional activities. During an open house discussion, representatives from MoU partner institutions shared best practices and innovative models for academic cooperation.

The event concluded with a collective commitment to deepen the culture of standardisation within Indian academia, empowering students and faculty to engage effectively with national and international quality frameworks. Fifty-eight partner institutions participated in the convention, with five institutions— IIT Roorkee, SSEC Chennai, NIT Jalandhar, SVCE Chennai, and PSNACET Dindigul—being recognized for their outstanding contributions to BIS-related activities under the MoU.
