Govt. seeks to facilitate divestment of AI

Currently moves are afoot on a collaborative basis between the civil aviation ministry and Department of Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT) to relax foreign direct investment (FDI) norms for Air India. The partnership wants to ensure that bidders get attracted to the divestment of the national carrier Air India.

Right now there is provision for 100 percent FDI in the aviation sector governed by the automatic route for MRO (maintenance, repair, and overhaul) besides ground handling and aircraft purchase. The government’s longstanding proposal to sell debt-ridden Air-India has so far failed to attract bidders.
