The National Zoological Park in New Delhi observed World Snake Day by organizing an extensive public engagement initiative aimed at educating citizens about the ecological importance of snakes and promoting informed coexistence. Over 100 visitors, including students, families and wildlife enthusiasts, participated in the event, which featured interactive sessions, expert-led discussions and practical demonstrations.
The programme showcased the remarkable diversity of snake species found around the world, placing particular emphasis on venomous snakes native to India. A major focus was placed on dispelling widespread myths and misconceptions about snakes, including the mischaracterization of their behavior and perceived danger to humans. Visitors learned about the vital role snakes play in maintaining ecological balance, especially in agricultural ecosystems, where they help control rodent populations and contribute to crop protection and food security.
Attendees were educated on emergency protocols in the event of a snakebite, with stress laid on the necessity of immediate medical attention and the rejection of traditional remedies that lack scientific efficacy. The sessions reinforced the importance of identifying symptoms accurately and seeking institutional healthcare without delay.
As part of the experiential learning, visitors interacted with the zoo’s snake enclosure staff, who shared insights into the routine care and biology of captive snakes. Topics covered included feeding habits, breeding cycles, hibernation patterns and safe enclosure practices. These conversations helped demystify snake behavior and foster empathy and curiosity toward these misunderstood reptiles.
The observance is part of the National Zoological Park’s commitment to wildlife education and conservation outreach. By encouraging deeper understanding of snakes and their natural roles, the programme aims to reduce irrational fear, correct misinformation and build a culture of coexistence with these vital members of India’s biodiversity.
