The Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation marked Statistics Day 2025 by highlighting major digital transformation achievements led by the National Statistical Office. Building on the launch of the eSankhyiki portal in June 2024, the Ministry announced that over a dozen new digital portals and modules have been successfully deployed to improve data accessibility, real-time dissemination, and transparency across the official statistical ecosystem.

Among the key innovations rolled out in the past year are the Data Innovation Lab, the Online Central Monitoring System, metadata portals, and public-facing websites for institutions such as the National Statistical Commission and the National Statistical System Training Academy. The eSankhyiki portal now hosts over 135 million statistical records and integrates user dashboards for the Annual Survey of Industries, Economic Census, National Sample Survey and the Social Statistics Division. The government will also launch the GoIStats mobile app, expanding on-the-go access to India’s official statistics.

To future-proof its data systems, the Ministry has identified seven emerging technology use cases for official statistics, of which three have completed proof-of-concept and three are in pilot stages. India is now a member of the UN Committee of Experts on Big Data and Data Science for Official Statistics, and has presented its framework at forums such as the UNECE Conference on Generative AI. The NSO has also partnered with international agencies to bring best practices into its workflow and accelerate innovation in statistical methodologies.

Recognising the critical importance of data security, the Ministry has strengthened its cybersecurity infrastructure through the appointment of a Chief Information Security Officer and onboarding of specialised agencies to safeguard national data assets. With the expanding scale of its digital ecosystem, this investment ensures protection of data integrity, confidentiality, and availability.

The Ministry continues to follow a phased strategy in its transformation efforts. The first phase focuses on improving data dissemination and collection, supported by platforms such as eSigma and eSankhyiki. The next phase will centre on optimising data processing, with a comprehensive implementation roadmap now in its final stages of planning. The goal is to modernise the entire statistical production system and reduce turnaround time for critical national data.

The Ministry reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring that quality statistics fuel India’s journey towards becoming a developed nation by 2047. By embedding transparency, timeliness, and innovation into its statistical operations, MOSPI aims to empower citizens, researchers, and policymakers alike with data that informs better decisions and strengthens the foundation of a truly data-driven democracy.
