Chandigarh: The Rampal case on Thursday brought under lens other religious deras running in Punjab and Haryana.
The Punjab and Haryana High Court, while hearing arguments in the Rampal case, today directed the governments of both the states to prepare a comprehensive report on all deras running inside their borders and file the same before it at the next hearing on November 28.

Amicus curiae and senior advocate Anupam Gupta informed reporters that the court observed there should be checks on other deras and ashrams as well, in the wake of arms and ammunitions being used during the standoff between Rampal’s associates and Haryana Police.

The HC bench observed that all religious ashrams and deras must declare the weapons they own. It further said that all such arms that are found to be non-licensed should be seized.

Advocate Gupta said while the court did not mention the issue in its order today, it is likely to hold a detailed discussion on the matter at the next hearing.

The HC today sent Rampal in judicial custody till November 28.
