World number one Andy Murray crashed out of the Italy Open on Tuesday after a superb performance by Italian Fabio Fognini in front of a cheering home crowd.
Fognini, ranked 29th in the world, won 6-2 6-4 but dominated the game with confident powerful shots while Murray had a disappointing night to forget.
The Brit was outplayed but also threw away a number of points through uncharacteristic unforced errors.
Murray has shown some vulnerability in recent weeks as he sets his sights on the French Open – a major he has never won.
Fognini, the highest ranked Italian in the world, will play the winner of the game between Alexander Zverev and Viktor Troicki.
