Mexico City: A strong earthquake measuring 8 on the Richter scale jolted Mexico City on Friday, according to weather officials

The quake originated 137 km south-west of Tonala in the southern state of Chiapas, Efe news quoted the Mexican national weather bureau (SSN) as saying.

So far there have been no reports of damage or casualties, but the tremor led to power cuts in the Mexican capital which was put on seismic alert.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre has issued a tsunami warning off the coast of Chiapas.
